A Day In The Life…
Here’s an entertaining story from my book, I Have A Complex, But I’m Managing It!. It would seem that the Fort Worth property manager who submitted this tale experienced several close encounters of the “marsupial-kind”. Or, as she called it— Possum-palooza!
A resident called the leasing office one morning in a panic. “Help!” she cried. “There’s a possum outside my front door, and I can’t get out! I’m trapped in here and I’m already running late for work!”
“Don’t worry,” I calmly replied. “Maintenance will be there in few minutes to run him off so you can leave.” After alerting our maintenance guy, I called animal control. As leaned back in my chair, I thought, It’s shaping up to be one of those days.
It wasn’t the first time one of our residents had experienced a brush with wildlife, but the funny thing was, we’d already caught one possum earlier that morning. In fact, the animal was still locked in a trap at the back of our office, waiting for animal control to come and retrieve it. I figured they could pick that critter up when they came to set another trap for its cousin.
Three Guys Play Possum
This seemed like a pretty efficient plan until I heard some loud crashing and cursing from the lobby.
I rushed to my office door and poked my head around the corner. “What on earth is going on out here?” I asked.
It’s loose!” One of my maintenance guys yelled while his two helpers attempted to corral something I couldn’t see on the other side of the leasing desk.
I looked in the corner where our first possum was supposed to be safe and secure in the trap. To my horror, the cage was empty.
“Oh, dear,” I sighed, hoping the thing wouldn’t come near me. With that in mind, I deliberately stayed within close proximity to my office door. I actually considered shutting myself in there but there was no way I wanted to miss out on the action.
Watching three grown men chase that varmint all over our office for the next ten minutes was almost more than I could bear. I laughed so hard I cried. How I regretted not capturing it on video!
The guys finally managed to get the frightened creature back into the cage. Shortly thereafter, animal control arrived and took it away.
Later that same day, as I walked through the pool area, I saw a third possum, casually making its way upstairs to a second-floor landing.
Three possums before five o’clock— I think we set a record for the number of times anyone has called animal control in one day!
